Sacred Celebration: Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca

This bucket-list retreat gathers us in Oaxaca as the city comes alive in the days leading up to the Día de los Muertos celebrations. Stepping away from daily routines and into the rhythm of this extraordinary place, we’ll open our senses and immerse ourselves in the beauty, traditions, and rich culture of this historic town. Daily yoga practices, cooking classes, mezcal tastings, and explorations of local art offer a vibrant way to experience Oaxaca. Along the way, we’ll savor exquisite cuisine, admire colorful textiles and costumes, and witness traditions that honor ancestors and loved ones who have passed. Shared meals, conversation, and cultural discovery create opportunities for connection—to each other, to history, and to our own roots. You’ll leave inspired by the artistry and reverence of this culture, and nourished in every sense by one of the world’s great culinary destinations.

Caravana Canina, Oaxaca
IY Travel Impact

Since 2015, Thread Caravan has been facilitating cultural art workshops in rural communities plagued by high street dog populations. Out of this initiative, Caravana Canina naturally emerged to address pressing community needs. With a focus on spaying and neutering as a long-term solution to combat neglect and abuse, the project has also provided crucial care such as feeding, vaccination, deworming, fostering, and adoption. Over 159 dogs have found new homes, 484 have undergone spaying and neutering procedures, and countless others have received essential care in Mexico.

Not Included: airfare, meals, gratuities, and excursions not listed above.

What airport do I fly into?

Your international flight needs to be booked round trip to Oaxaca Xoxocotlan International Airport (OAX).

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect both you and your investment. Unexpected events—such as personal emergencies, health issues, political or environmental factors, or weather disruptions—can arise and affect travel plans.

For the maximum coverage, be sure to purchase your policy within 7–10 days of your initial deposit. Please note that, as we must adhere to our cancellation policy, you will be responsible for any costs if you choose not to have coverage. While we do not advise on specific policies, we recommend exploring options through the reputable travel insurance aggregator, InsureMyTrip. They can help you select a travel insurance provider and policy that best suits your needs.

What is the cancellation policy?

A $1000 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot on the trip. The final balance payment is due by June 25, 2027. If you cancel before the final balance deadline, we will refund any payments you have made, minus the non-refundable deposit. If you do not complete the payment by that date, the card on file will be automatically charged your remaining balance. If you register for the trip after June 25, 2027, the full amount is due at sign-up.  All payments are non-refundable and non-transferable after June 25, 2027. International Yoga must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred before the commencement of the retreat. Click here to view the Terms and Conditions to which you agree upon registration.

If you wish to cancel your participation in this program, you must advise International Yoga in writing to: [email protected].

Are airport transfers included in the price of my trip?

Yes, airport transfers are not included in your trip.

Are meals included in my program cost?

A highlight of this trip will be the chance to experience the incredible taste of Oaxaca! As such, we have included plenty of free time for you to go out and experience the local cuisine! Breakfasts are included throughout your trip in addition to 1 lunch and 3 dinners. All other meals should be included in your planned budget.

What if I am traveling alone?

International Yoga gets hundreds of individuals each year who travel alone on retreat.

If you prefer to share your room, we will do our best to match you with another traveler of the same gender. In the event we are unable to match you with a roommate, you will need to to pay a single supplement fee. The single supplement cost will be advised approximately 1 - 2 weeks prior to your departure.

If at any point you wish to upgrade to a single room, please submit an email request to [email protected]. Single rooms are limited and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.

Are gratuities included?

Tips for the kitchen, dining & housekeeping staff are not included in your trip price. We suggest that you budget $15 per day/person or $100 per week/person. This will be shared amongst all the service staff. You may leave this with the manager at the end of your stay. Gratuities for the spa staff need to be paid directly to them at the time of service. All gratuities should be paid in cash.

Do I need a visa for travel to Mexico?

No, acquiring a visa prior to your travel to Mexico is not required. During the flight to Oaxaca you will be given documentation to fill out which you will then need to present to the immigration official upon your entry into Mexico. BE SURE YOU KEEP THIS PIECE OF PAPER FOR YOUR DEPARTURE. You will be asked for this upon check-in for your return flight home. If you do not have this piece of paper there will be a fine and the hassle of redoing all of this paperwork on the spot!

Does my travel require any vaccinations?

There are no required vaccinations for travel to Mexico. However, there are some recommended (suggested) vaccinations given by the CDC. To see the complete list of what is recommended, please visit the CDC Website and consult with your primary care physician to make a decision on what is best for you.

What is the weather like in Oaxaca?

In October, Oaxaca enjoys warm, comfortable days with highs in the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and cooler evenings dipping into the mid-50s—perfect for exploring by day and cozying up at night. While October falls near the end of the rainy season, showers are typically brief and give way to clear skies, leaving the valleys lush and vibrant. It’s an ideal time to experience the region’s colorful markets, ancient sites, and natural beauty at its most alive.

How many people are expected on this retreat?

Attendance varies from trip to trip, but 15 - 25 attendees is a general average.
