Life Wide Open

Set beneath Mongolia’s immense skies and open landscapes, this retreat invites us to return to the immediacy of experience through daily yoga, meditation, breath practice, and creative inquiry.  We are visiting Mongolia during their vibrant national Naadam Festival, held each July, where traditional horse racing, archery, and wrestling offer a living expression of Mongolian culture and connection to the land. This is a rare opportunity to experience such a unique culture, and we'll likely be touched by it. You’ll leave feeling more connected to yourself and more awake to wonder.

FAQ

Is This More of a Yoga Retreat or an Adventure Trip?

This journey offers a beautiful balance of both. Each day includes yoga, meditation, and opportunities for reflection, while the destination itself invites a deeper spirit of exploration. Set in the vast landscapes of Mongolia's Orkhon Valley, you'll have opportunities to experience the region's rich history, nomadic culture, and extraordinary natural beauty.

Activities may include hiking, horseback riding, cultural excursions, visits to ancient monasteries and historical sites, wildlife viewing, and simply soaking in the profound stillness of the Mongolian steppes. While yoga provides the foundation for the experience, this retreat is designed for travelers who enjoy combining meaningful practice with adventure, discovery, and cultural immersion.

What Kind of Yoga Can I Expect on This Retreat?

Jennifer Prugh brings more than three decades of teaching experience to her retreats, offering a practice that is both accessible and deeply transformative.

Her classes weave together mindful movement, breathwork, meditation, philosophy, and storytelling, creating space for both personal reflection and joyful exploration. Expect practices that support strength, mobility, presence, and connection—while honoring the unique needs of each student.

Whether you're a newer practitioner or have been practicing for years, Jennifer creates an inclusive environment that encourages curiosity, self-discovery, and a deeper relationship with yourself both on and off the mat.

What Are the Accommodations Like?

Our home for the week is the remarkable Genghis Khan Retreat, located in Mongolia's breathtaking Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage region known for its sweeping grasslands, rivers, and mountain vistas.

Guests stay in beautifully appointed traditional Mongolian gers (yurts) that blend rustic charm with thoughtful comfort. Each ger features handcrafted furnishings, comfortable beds with high-quality linens and cashmere blankets, wood-burning stoves for cooler evenings, and private lavatories.

The retreat also includes dedicated bath gers with traditional Japanese-style soaking tubs, wood-heated showers overlooking the valley, a yoga ger, and inviting communal spaces where guests gather for meals, conversation, and evening entertainment. Despite its remote location, the retreat offers an unexpectedly comfortable and memorable wilderness experience.

What will the weather be like in July?

July is one of the most pleasant times of year to visit central Mongolia. Expect warm, sunny days with temperatures typically ranging from the mid-70s°F (24°C) during the day, while mornings and evenings can be considerably cooler, often dipping into the mid-50s°F (13°C).

We recommend packing layers, including lightweight clothing for daytime activities, along with a fleece, sweater, or light jacket for cooler mornings and evenings. A waterproof outer layer is also a good idea, as mountain weather can occasionally be unpredictable.

What if I'm traveling alone?

We get hundreds of travelers each year who go on retreats alone. If you are traveling without a friend or partner, but prefer to share your room, we will do our best to match you with another traveler of the same gender. If for some reason, we are not able to match you with a roommate, a single supplement will apply.

If you prefer to have your own private room, a single supplement will apply.

Do I need travel insurance?

At International Yoga, we strongly recommend the purchase of travel insurance to protect yourself and your investment. Unexpected events—such as personal emergencies, political or environmental factors, health issues, or weather-related disruptions—can arise and may prevent or interrupt your travel plans. Note that because we must strictly adhere to our cancellation policy, you will be responsible for 100% of any costs associated with the cancellation or interruption of your retreat should you choose not to purchase travel insurance.

While we do not provide recommendations for specific policies, we suggest exploring options through the reputable travel insurance aggregator, InsureMyTrip. They can help you find a provider and policy that best suits your needs. For maximum coverage, we advise purchasing travel insurance within 7–10 days of placing your initial deposit.

What Airport Do I Fly Into?

You will fly into and out of Chinggis Khaan International Airport (airport code: ULN), located near Mongolia's capital city, Ulaanbaatar. We recommend arriving at least one day before the retreat begins, as the group transfer to the retreat departs from Ulaanbaatar on the morning of the first day. Additional details and recommended pre-retreat hotels will be provided after registration.

Are Airport Transfers Included in the Price of My Trip?

Yes. Private transfers between Chinggis Khaan International Airport (ULN) and Genghis Khan Retreat in the Orkhon Valley are included in the cost of your retreat.

Whether you arrive before the retreat begins or depart after it concludes, our team will arrange your transportation between the airport and the retreat center. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenic journey through Mongolia's spectacular countryside.

Do I Need a Visa for Mongolia?

For many travelers, including U.S. citizens, a visa is not required for tourist visits of up to 90 days. However, entry requirements can change, and visa regulations vary by nationality. We recommend checking with your local Mongolian embassy or consulate for the most current requirements.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your date of arrival in Mongolia.

How many people are expected on this trip?

Attendance varies from trip to trip, but 15 - 25 attendees is a general average.

Are all levels of yoga welcome, from beginning to more advanced?

Yes, all levels are welcome. You will find that wherever you are in your practice you will get just what you need out of the yoga classes on this retreat. International Yoga works only with experienced and extremely qualified teachers, which ensures that everyone's yoga needs will be met.

What is the cancellation policy for this trip?

A $1000 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot on the trip. The final balance payment is due by February 5, 2027. If you cancel before the final balance deadline, we will refund any payments you have made, minus the non-refundable deposit. If you do not complete the payment by February 5, 2027, the card on file will be automatically charged your remaining balance on that date to secure your space on the retreat, unless we have advised otherwise.
