For fourteen years, her yoga studio, Breathe Together Yoga in Silicon Valley, has been an inclusive space for healing, insight, growth, and lasting friendships. In her recent book, River of Offerings, 12 Journeys Following the Ganges River (link), Jennifer explores the intersection of love, awareness, and wisdom, expressed through the ancient stories of three great rivers in India.

FAQ

What inspired you to teach yoga?

I had moments of insight during my practice that brought great joy and expanded how I saw the world. A professor for eight years before leaving to teach yoga full-time, I realized the limitations of simply acquiring knowledge. I had become a healthier, more joyful, clearer human being through the practice of yoga. I wanted to provide that experience to others.

Who are your most influential teachers?

Ram Dass, Dalai Lama, Tias Little, Richard Rosen, Mingyur Rinpoche, Mark Singleton.

How would you describe your classes?

Like origami, or the Japanese art of folding, the body moves progressively, breath by breath, towards one or more apex postures, much like a conscious walk up an unexplored mountain path. We utilize historically early yoga-asana, contemporary expressions of movement, and an understanding of seasonal practice. I focus on internal alignment, self-inquiry and a love for a breath-centered adventure. Counter postures unfold the body for seated practice. My aim in meditation is to support people in cultivating a life long & life changing practice.

Why do you feel retreats are transformational?

We step out of the routine of our lives and into a new world. We learn about other cultures, connect with people we otherwise wouldn't, reflect upon our lives at home, be inspired by the people we meet, cultivate new habits and ways of being while "on the road," and come home inspired and empowered to live our lives fully.

What is your favorite pose to teach?

I love teaching any posture where students realize that their body is far more capable than their mind knew. I have no favorites because I love teaching them all.

What is your favorite pose to practice?

I do love Tittibhasana, Firefly pose.

Where are your favorite places to travel?

I am currently fascinated with Japan, have traveled to India 17 times, I love Tibet, Bhutan & Ladakh. I love France, Portugal, and Egypt is out of this world.
