Yoga, Culture & Balinese New Year

Yoga, Culture & Balinese New Year

Join Laura on a trip of a lifetime to explore the rich culture and beauty of Bali. This epic retreat will be the perfect combination of luxury, learning, adventure and relaxation. During this week you will practice in and explore one of the most gorgeous and spiritually potent settings in the world. You’ll enjoy the luxury of a stunning 5-star hotel owned by Ubud’s royal family, where each individual villa (with private pool!) is your sanctuary for the week. You will also be surrounded by the island's natural beauty and lush gardens as you participate in workshop-style yoga classes in the morning and all-levels vinyasa classes in the evening.

This is truly one of the most incredible weeks of the year to be in Bali as they prepare for the Balinese New Year, called Nyepi or "The Day of Silence." For the Balinese, it's a time for self-reflection and cleansing as they observe 24 hours of total silence, preceded by firecrackers, singing, laughter, parades and general excitement everywhere. It’s an unforgettable experience to witness the whole island shutting down (no electricity, no driving on the roads, no one working) and to be a part of this powerful ancient tradition. We, as guests, will also take part in the authentic Nyepi rituals and celebrations, which happen just once a year. It's truly an experience that will invite you to go inward and stay with you forever.

The Bali Institute, Ubud’s premiere cultural organization, will guide us on exclusive immersion experiences to some of Bali’s most colorful markets and sacred local temples. We will observe ancient spiritual practices and meet community leaders and dignitaries to develop a better understanding of this unique culture.

Laura sought out yoga to help combat serious health problems due to a decade of major stress and insomnia. She was drawn to yoga because it reminded her of the similar movement mediation she found when she used to dance, but unlike dance, yoga encouraged her to respect her body rather than push her body beyond its limits. Laura’s creative, well-rounded classes are smartly sequenced with a smooth, rhythmic flow. What are the accommodations like?

Enjoy one of the most gorgeous 5-star award-winning hotels in Bali, designed personally by one of the princes of Ubud—every component was designed as part of a spiritual and sacred journey. Built on the jungle cliffs with more than 97 private villas, each having their own infinity pool, the property looks out on majestic green mountains that will take your breath away. Practice yoga in a gorgeous open-air shala and then cool off in the sacred natural springs or swim in its unbelievable half-mile meandering pool that is built along the edges of the sacred Ayung River.
