Tea, Taiko, Trikonasana and Tempura: A Journey Through Japan

Embark on an unforgettable journey through some of Japan’s cultural treasures with Margi Young and our expert local guides! Yoga and meditation will keep us grounded and open throughout this eight-day adventure so that we may be present to all the depth this country and its people have to offer.

The trip begins with a few days in the bustling and thrilling metropolis of Tokyo. From there, we’ll retreat to Shimotakai, staying at a ryokan (a traditional Japanese hotel complete with bathing rituals and a kaiseki multi-course meal). Next, we depart from the cleanest, most orderly train station you’ve ever seen and take a bullet train to the charming historic city of Takayama, located in the mountains of the Gifu Prefecture. After that, we’ll have four days to soak in the cultural richness of Kyoto, visiting a handful of the 1,600 temples and 400 shrines! We’ll be treated to traditional experiences like Taiko drumming, a Zazen meditation, and a tea ceremony.

This will be an awake, meditative encounter with Japan, through all five senses: the majestic sight of Mt. Fuji, the sound of Buddhist monks chanting at dawn, the fragrance of smoking cedar branches from a Buddhist fire ritual, and the sensation of slipping into the hot mineral waters of a rural Onsen. We will savor the world-renowned flavors of Japan, from haute cuisine to enjoying a bowl of homemade noodles sitting alongside locals at a ramen house.

Best of all, we’ll experience the soul of Japan through its people, artists, monks, children, and elders. We may also meet up with some of Margi’s Japanese yoga students and friends! We’ll return home having had a soul connection with Japan!

FAQ

What airport do I fly into?

Your retreat begins in Tokyo and ends in Osaka. For that reason, we suggest that you fly into Tokyo Narita International Airport (airport code: NRT) and depart out of Kansai International Airport (airport code: KIX).

On the last day of our trip, we will travel from Kyoto to Osaka in time for afternoon flights. We suggest booking your departure from Osaka no earlier than 5 pm. For those departing out of Tokyo, additional arrangements can be made.

Do I need a Visa to visit Japan?

American citizens visiting Japan do not need a visa if they are traveling as a tourist with a valid U.S. passport. You will be issued a temporary tourist visa upon entry, which is valid for up to 90 days.

IMPORTANT: If your passport expires within six months of your arrival date to Japan, please be sure to renew your passport before you go to avoid any issues at immigration. There are no exceptions.

Are airport transfers included?

Yes, group arrival and departure airport transfers are included.  Private transfers are not included but we would be happy to arrange these for you.

How many people are expected on this retreat?

Attendance varies from trip to trip, but 15 - 25 attendees is a general average.

Are gratuities included?

Gratuities are not included in the price of the trip. Generally speaking, tipping is not practiced in Japan. However in the tourism business, it is the custom to tip, especially the guides and the drivers (if you have a personal private driver - no tips for taxi drivers). While tipping is not obligatory it is greatly appreciated and we suggest around $10/person/day for tip to our guide and driver.

Do I need travel insurance?

International Yoga strongly recommends the purchase of travel insurance. A personal, political, environmental, health, or weather-related incident may arise that can prevent or interrupt your travels. If you do not purchase travel insurance you will be assuming 100% of any costs associated with the cancellation/ interruption of your retreat.

While we cannot advise on specific travel insurance policies, we recommend looking at plans through the reputable travel insurance provider, Travelex. The FAQ section at the bottom of their website is quite helpful, and they have a number you can call as well.

Note that to guarantee maximum coverage, most travel insurance providers require that you obtain a policy within 10 - 15 days of placing your initial deposit.

What are the accommodations like?

On this trip we stay in several wonderful properties, chosen either for their grandeur or location, many of which rank among Japan's finest accommodations. In these hotels, all rooms have private baths. Single rooms are limited at all of our hotels. Please contact us at [email protected] to discuss the accommodations in detail.

Do I need vaccinations?

There are no required vaccinations for travel to Japan. However, there are some recommended (suggested) vaccinations given by the CDC. To see the complete list of what is recommended, please visit the CDC Website and consult with your primary care physician to make a decision on what is best for you.

What if I am traveling alone?

We get hundreds of travelers each year who go on retreat alone. If you are traveling without a friend or partner, but prefer to share your room, we will do our best to match you with another traveler of the same gender. If for some reason, we are not able to match you with a roommate, a single supplement will apply. If you prefer to have your own private room, a single supplement will apply.

Are meals included?

Breakfast is included throughout your trip in addition to 5 dinners. All other meals should be included in your planned budget.

What is the cancellation policy for this trip?

A $1000 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot on the trip. The final balance payment is due by February 5, 2025. If you cancel before the final balance deadline we will refund any payments you have made, minus the non-refundable deposit. If you do not complete the payment on your own by that date, the card on file will be automatically charged your remaining balance. If you register for the trip after February 5, 2025. the full amount is due at sign-up.  All payments are non-refundable and non-transferable after February 5, 2025. International Yoga must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred before the commencement of the retreat. Click here to view the Terms and Conditions to which you agree upon registration.  Travel is strongly recommended!
