Laura Burkhart is 500 – E-RYT a San Francisco based international teacher, and featured online teacher on Grokker, My Yoga Works, and Yoga Vibes. Laura sought out yoga to help combat serious health problems due to a decade of major stress and insomnia. She was drawn to yoga because it reminded her of the similar movement mediation she found when she used to dance, but unlike dance, yoga encouraged her to respect her body rather than push her body beyond its limits. Laura’s creative, well-rounded classes are smartly sequenced with a smooth, rhythmic flow. She is a two-time cover model and regular contributor for Yoga Journal Magazine and has presented at festivals such as the Yoga Journal Conference, The Bali Spirit Festival, Yoga Festival Italy and Wanderlust 108. Laura mentors teachers in creating solid public and online teacher careers, and co-leads 200-hr teacher trainings with Jason Crandell. Learn more at

What inspired you to teach yoga?

Yoga helped me with health issues that resulted from decades of stress and being overworked. Yoga also helped me peel away the layers and demands placed on me by society, connect with my authentic core, and make decisions in life from that place rather than from outside influences. Yoga has had such positive influence on my life that I decided to change my career path to help others find relief from stress and connect with their authentic core through a fluid meditative practice.

Jason Crandell and Shiva Rea

How would you describe your style?

I teach smart, well-rounded, creatively sequenced classes that have a smooth rhythmic flow. On a retreat, I tend to teach workshop-style classes in the morning, then we take what we’ve learn in the workshop and practice it through fluid, alignment-based vinyasa class in the evening.

Why do you feel retreats are transformational?

Retreats are great for delving deeper into your practice in addition to creating lifelong friendship with other retreat goers. It’s amazing to share daily yoga practices together and have once-in-a-lifetime experiences together all around the world.

What is your favorite pose to teach?

I love teaching trikonasana (triangle pose) because there is so much going on in the pose. I also love teaching variations of bakasana (crow pose).

What is your favorite pose to practice?

Trikonasana again, because there is a lot going on in the pose. I also love the way Utthan Pristhasana (lizard pose) feels.

Greece. Croatia. Italy. Hawaii.
