Yoga, Culture and the Balinese New Year with Joan Hyman
March 18 - 25, 2015
Join Joan on a trip of a lifetime to explore the beauty and rich culture of Bali. Delve deeper into your yoga practice in one of the most gorgeous settings in the world. Accommodation is in a stunning 5-star hotel owned by Ubud’s royal family where each individual villa has its own private pool. Our daily yoga practices will take place in one of the most gorgeous yoga pavilions we have ever seen surrounded on one side by lush gardens and a naturally flowing river on the other.
This is truly one of the most incredible weeks of the year to be in Bali as they prepare for the Balinese New Year, called Nyepi or ‘The Day of Silence.’ For the Balinese, it is a time for self-reflection and cleansing as they observe 24 hours of total silence, preceded by firecrackers, singing, laughter, parades and general excitement everywhere. It’s an unforgettable experience to witness the whole island shutting down (no electricity, no driving on the roads, no one working) and to be a part of this powerful ancient tradition. We, as guests, will also take part in the authentic Nyepi rituals and celebrations which happen just once a year and it’s an experience that will stay with you forever.
The Bali Institute, Ubud’s premiere cultural organization, will guide us on exclusive immersion experiences to some of Bali’s most colorful markets and sacred local temples. We will observe ancient spiritual practices and meet community leaders and dignitaries to develop a better understanding of this unique culture.
Joan Hyman's grounded teaching style seamlessly supports her students as they emerge from their practice with the rich and bright energy that yoga offers. Joan’s teachings come from an organic and intuitive place, as she draws upon the combination studies of Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga as well as Ayurveda, and meditation. An authentic modern day yogi, Joan's love and devotion show up in her practice and through her teachings.
With over twenty years of experience leading retreats, trainings, and workshops worldwide - fifteen of which as a distinguished YogaWorks senior teacher - Joan recently brought her expertise to Wanderlust as the Director of Teacher Trainings.
