Radiance & Refuge - The Healing Power of Yoga in Guatemala - NEW ROOMS ADDED!

Join Erika Trice for a week of deep healing at this exclusive retreat center located on the shores of the Lake Atitlan, described as “the most beautiful lake in the world,” by Alexander von Humboldt. Surrounded by three volcanoes, this uniquely picturesque and tranquil location has tastefully designed rooms each featuring lake and volcanic peak views. Along the lake are a dozen villages where life and customs have changed little over the centuries, each offering a rich and tapestry of food, color, language, and culture.

Each morning will begin with qigong, pranayama, and meditation followed by a dynamic asana practice. The late afternoons/early evenings sessions will explore a softer more inwardly focused practice leading towards meditation. This will be an immersion into the profound healing effects of yoga. Included in our exploration will also be philosophy and chakra work. Between practices, days will be yours to explore, hike, swim in the gorgeous lake or visit the local communities. We will gather together for delicious meals and share our experiences. This week will be an immersion both in asana and in life.

FAQ

What airport do I fly into?

You will book your international ticket into and out of Guatemala City (airport code: GUA) to arrive the morning of March 16th and depart on the late afternoon or evening of March 23rd.

Are airport transfers included in the price of my trip?

No. Airport transfers are not included in the total trip price. The retreat center does provide a shuttle service from the airport directly to the retreat facility. We will help to facilitate shuttle groups closer to the date of departure once we have received more individual flight arrival details.

Your are arrival and boat transfer are included.

Are gratuities included in my trip price?

No, gratuities are not included. We recommend giving a tip between $6-$8 per day to Villa Sumaya. This Dana (offering) goes to the entire staff; from the gardeners (who carry your bags), to kitchen staff and housekeeping to the local managers. Please tip body workers and tour guides separately.

We get hundreds of travelers each year who go on retreat alone. If for some reason, we are not able to match you with a roommate, a single supplement will apply.

How Safe is it to Travel to Guatemala?

A note from the owner of the retreat center where we will be staying:

Our retreat center is located in a remote, rural and incredibly beautiful area near the pueblo of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Guatemala, with a population of about 4,000. The only access to our retreat center is by boat which ensures that our landscape is quiet and pristinely preserved. I am one of 100 foreigners living in this village, and we all come and go to our destinations without disturbances. Our village and outlying area has virtually no crime at all.

While I am an American citizen by birth, I've lived in Guatemala for over 25 years. I have 2 children who were born and raised here. We travel annually to Europe and USA without incidence. We love living on Lake Atitlan, the stronghold of the living Mayan indigenous who've become our extended family. Our retreat center is located on the lake shore with a view of 3 perfect volcanoes. Our gardens are bursting with tropical plants, birds and butterflies.

Since 2004, we've ushered hundreds of groups to and from our little oasis without incident. We have individuals and groups picked up in private shuttles with experienced drivers to eliminate any chance of problems in the city. We have long-term, time tested relationships with two fabulous shuttle companies who stay in touch with us throughout the duration of each trip. We know our drivers personally and have been on many trips with them ourselves.

I am cautious when I travel in Guatemala City, as I am when I travel in any big city. The Aurora International airport in Guatemala is clean, safe and efficiently managed. We've had many people shuttling from Guatemala City to our retreat center year after year, and so far it's all been smooth.  It's quite a bit like flying into NYC where anything goes, only to be swiftly taken to an idyllic location such as Cape Cod or Vermont.

Of course, everyone needs to make the decisions that feel right to them as the future is, by its nature, unknown. No one can make guarantees for others. We do our best to make the journey to our center smooth and pleasant. We've created a safe, effective transport system that will enable you to land in this powerfully beautiful and spiritually inspiring piece of paradise!  We sure hope you'll chose to join us for an unforgettable week of adventure and insight.
